The study shows a strong recovery in this field after the pandemic
The Vice Chancellor for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship of the University of Malaga, Rafael Ventura, and the Councilor for Promotion of the City and Attraction of Investments of the Malaga City Council, Rosa Sánchez, presented today at the Municipal Heritage Museum the results of the 'GEM Report (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor) Malaga 2021-22'.
The report is the result of the investigation carried out by the team of the UMA Chair of Sustainable Entrepreneurship directed by Rafael Ventura, financed by the Malaga City Council through Promálaga.
Rosa Sánchez has described the data in the report as "frankly positive", since they show that entrepreneurial intention in Malaga "grows favorably and exponentially". The measurement of entrepreneurial dynamics offers records that "place Malaga in a leading position at the national level," she added.
For his part, Ventura highlighted the "uniqueness" of being able to have a GEM Report in Malaga for the province and its capital: "It is already the fourth report, prepared using a global methodology, which allows us to have data solid and very consistent”. Among its results, Malaga's leadership in “entrepreneurial intention” stood out, in comparative terms with the rest of the autonomous communities. "City and province have already managed to recover to a large extent the thrust of innovative entrepreneurship prior to the pandemic," he added.
Likewise, the report points out "the drop in the abandonment or closure rate" with respect to that observed in 2020 and the "recovery of female entrepreneurship", in which women go from representing 29% of the Entrepreneurial Activity Rate in 2020, to comprise 46% in 2021.
The entrepreneurial intention of the population of the capital (11,5%) is the highest registered at the national level and significantly exceeds the data in Andalusia (10,3%) and Spain (9%). The Entrepreneurial Activity Rate-TEA (6%), or percentage of the population involved in the creation of a new company in the province is only surpassed by the communities of Catalonia, Madrid and Cantabria.
In general terms, 46,4% of the population consulted in Malaga perceive the creation of a company as feasible. This figure is also the highest to that registered in the different autonomous communities and exceeds the Andalusian figure and the Spanish average (38%). In addition, Malaga is the economy in which the lowest percentage of new companies are created out of necessity.
The percentage of the population of the city of Malaga that is involved in the creation of nascent companies or of less than three months (3,6%) is notably higher than that registered at the national (2,9%) and Andalusian (2,2. 1,8%). Likewise, the rate of abandonment or closure of the city of Malaga (2,0%) is lower than that observed in Andalusia (2,2%) and Spain (XNUMX%).
Malaga is also the territory that presents the lowest percentage of entrepreneurship out of necessity and surpasses Andalusia and Spain in the motivations related to the creation of wealth and impact in the world.
The rate of entrepreneurial activity in the province experienced a slight drop, but in line with what is happening in Andalusia and Spain. This decrease is due to the rate of new companies (more than three months and less than forty-two). The effect of the pandemic has been observed in the population of these companies. However, the rate of start-up companies (less than three months old) has grown and shows a recovery in entrepreneurial activity.
Lastly, the context indicator (NECI), which results from consulting experts in Malaga, reaches the highest figure recorded in any autonomous community. The consultation carried out shows that the most outstanding factors in the Malaga context for the creation of companies are the existence and access to physical and service infrastructures, public programs, entrepreneurial education and training at higher levels and the existence and access to commercial and professional infrastructure. On the contrary, the least valued factors are entrepreneurial education in primary and secondary education and the dynamics of the internal market.
